Latest Developments in the Farmer’s Protest
"Save Agriculture, Save Democracy" to be marked all over India tomorrow on the completion of 7 months of farmers' protests and 46 years after promulgation of Emergency in India in 1975 - Lakhs of farmers and other citizens will be sending their memorandum to the President of India tomorrow through Governors of States and Union Territories. Letter can be read here
“In the past seven months, what we witnessed and experienced first hand reminds us of the Emergency period 46 years ago. Today, it is not just the farmers’ movement that is facing repression, but the movements of workers, youth & students, women, minority communities, dalits as well as Adivasis. As in the time of the Emergency back then, many true patriots have been put into prisons. Draconian laws like UAPA are being misused against ones who are resisting the authoritarian regime. Media is shrouded in fear and favouritism. Judiciary’s freedom is under attack. Human rights are being violated routinely. Without declaring an Emergency, democracy is being throttled every day. In this context, as the main custodian of our constitutional framework, there is a great responsibility on you, President Sir.” - From the letter to Governors
In the face of the growing strength of the farmers' movement including in Haryana, the state government is harassing supporters of the farmers' movement. Ram Singh Rana, who runs Golden Hut dhabas in Kurukshetra, is now being troubled by the administration which has installed barricades and closed path leading to the dhaba. Samyukt Kisan Morcha pledges its support to Ram Singh Rana and other supporters like him, and farmers will ensure in every possible peaceful way that the administration does not harass them. Local villagers are extending full support in the form of supply of food materials like milk and vegetables to various morcha sites. As reported yesterday, around 50 trolley loads of wheat was donated by villagers in and around Kharkhoda of Sonepat, Haryana. This effort was led by RKMS.
